Memoirs of a Beatnik with: Pieces of a Song with: Loba (Including Ephemera)

New York, NY; San Francisco, CA: The Penguin Group; City Lights Books, 1990; 1998. First Editions Thus; First Edition. Softcovers. A bundle of classic works by Diane di Prima (1934-2020), among the primary- & one of the few female- original poets of the Beat Generation & Beyond: (1) Memoirs of a Beatnik [ISBN 0-14-02-3539-6], trade-format softcover original, first edition thus (1998), second printing as indicated by number sequence on copyright page. First published in 1969, this famous & popular memoir describes di Prima's adventures (with all the great Beat figures you could imagine), creations & quests during the height of the Beat era. (2) Pieces of a Song [ISBN 0-87286-237-2], trade-format softcover original, third printing as indicated by number sequence on copyright page, published by the Beat-legendary City Lights imprint. A mid-later career collection of selected poems with a short introduction by di Prima's colleague the great Black Mountain poet Robert Creeley, chronology & title index. (3) Loba [ISBN 0-14-058-752-7], trade-format softcover original, first expanded edition thus, presumed first printing (with no indication of further printings). Originally released in three volumes with a total of eight parts during the 1970s, this first complete & expanded edition with sixteen parts was published in 1998. As di Prima writes in her Author's Note (pg. XIII) about this epic poem-cycle: "The Work is, like they say, in "progress". The author reserves the right to juggle, re-arrange, cut, osterize, recycle parts of the poem in future editions. As the Loba wishes, as the Goddess dictates." All of the above are from the collection of the late Erin Black Matson, the artist-poet who was, along with her then-husband the acclaimed poet & educator Clive Matson, a member of the Beat Generation- morphing into the hippie counterculture during the 1960s. The Matsons were colleagues & protégés (in lifestyle as much as literature) of Herbert Huncke, Bonnie Bremser & many others including di Prima herself- Erin was the illustrator of the legendary Huncke's Journal (1965, see our item No. 2953), published by di Prima's Poet's Press imprint. In di Prima's later memoir Recollections of My Life as a Woman (2001, see our item No. 4755), the publication of Huncke's Journal & a chapbook of poems by Clive, also by Poet's Press, are mentioned. We found & have retained Erin-phemera (so to speak) in all of these books: In (1), clipping from unknown (circa 2001) issue of The New York Times Book Review of a review of Recollections... by Barbara Grizzuti Harrison, folded into three panels, six sides; in (2), a bank deposit receipt; & in (3), clipped portion of a photograph (probably of an artwork by Erin). The latter two items were apparently used by Erin as bookmarks, & they all have been left where we found them. Three important di Prima collectible editions, with distinguished provenance & interesting ephemera, all in near-fine condition relative to their long ownership & use by Erin, who was a tried-&-true Beat-Bohemian to the end: (1) with mild rubbing, scratching & creasing to front, back covers & spine; mild wear & some tiny bumps, creases at edges & corners of same; mild browning to edges of text block; several small, light spot-stains at upper edge of same. Interior fine with mild browning mostly to blank margins of page leaves; very occasional spotting at same & blank inner covers; small creases, tiny bumps at corners of a few leaves. Ephemera fine, folded as noted with mild browning. (2) with mild-to-moderate rubbing, profuse but faint & shallow scratching (esp. on front cover, apparently impression of Erin's writing) to front, back covers & spine; mild wear & some tiny bumps, creases at thin edges & corners of same; mild rubbing & moderate spotting to edges of text block. Interior fine with a hint of browning & occasional spotting to blank inner covers; miniscule bleeding of spots noted above onto side edges of a few page leaves; tiny bumps at corners of a few of same. Ephemera near-fine with moderate rubbing, creasing & browning, mild edge-wear incl. a few chips with slight loss of paper. (3) with mild rubbing, scratching, creasing & occasional spotting to front, back covers & spine; mild wear & some tiny bumps, creases at edges & corners of same; a bit of rubbing & occasional spotting to edges of text block. Interior fine with small-medium faint creases across upper corners of most page leaves; much less & smaller to lower corners of a few of same. Ephemera fine with moderate rubbing to blank (except for logo) verso. Near Fine. [Item #4789]
