The Niagara Magazine Number Nine (Fall 1978)
Brooklyn, NY: The Niagara Magazine, 1978. First Printing. Stapled Wrappers. This number of the literary journal edited by Neil Baldwin is entirely devoted to an interview with Robert Creeley (1926-2005), the canonical American poet of the Black Mountain School who was associated with the Beat Generation. The interview was conducted by Kevin Power & took place in Buffalo, NY during 1976. Creeley expounds at length on art & poetry in this most insightful dialogue. With a short foreword by William Navero (which mentions the Towering Charles Olson's dedication of his epic Maximus Poems to his protege-colleague Creeley), & an introduction by Power. Chapbook-format journal in stapled wrappers. From the collection of the late Erin Black Matson, the artist-poet who, along with her then-husband the acclaimed poet & educator Clive Matson, was a member of the Beat Generation- morphing into the hippie counterculture during the 1960s. The Matsons were protégés & colleagues (in lifestyle as much as literature) of Herbert Huncke, Bonnie Bremser et al. A scarce & quite important Creeley-related collectible with distinguished & appropriate provenance. The relatively fair-to-good condition of this item reflects its long ownership & use by Erin, who was a tried-&-true Beat-Bohemian to the end: Significant rubbing, soiling, browning & spotting incl. small areas with loss of surface paper to front, back covers & stapled spine; mild wear & some tiny bumps, creases at edges & corners of same; staples in process of rusting with minimal interior bleeding; significant rubbing, browning & spotting to edges of text block. Interior good-to-near-fine with medium-sized stain decreasingly echoing from blank inner front cover through blank areas of first seven-or-so page leaves at lower margins/ corners; slight bleeding of spots noted above onto lower edges of some of same; small, faint creases & tiny bumps at esp. upper corners of some of same; very slight rust-bleeding noted above at stapled middle. We note that all text is bright, completely legible & all-but-free of the above points. Fair- Good. [Item #4790]
