Strong Opinions

New York, NY: McGraw-Hill, 1973. First Printing. Hardcover. "I think like a genius, I write like a distinguished author, and I speak like a child. Throughout my academic ascent in America, from lean lecturer to Full Professor, I have never delivered to my audience one scrap of information not prepared in typescript beforehand and not held under my eyes on the bright-lit lectern. At parties, if I attempt to entertain people with a good story, I have to go back to every other sentence for oral erasures and inserts. / ... / In these circumstances nobody should ask me to submit to an interview if by "interview" a chat between two normal human beings is implied. / ... / The interviewer's questions have to be sent to me in writing, and reproduced verbatim." So writes Vladimir Nabokov (1899-1977) in the somewhat misleadingly titled "Strong Opinions," a compendium of interviews conducted with the legendary Russian novelist and spanning a decade-long interval between 1962 and 1972. The interviews assembled are guarded and fascinating...vacillating coolly between the luminary, the descriptive, and the quizzical. Interviews with the BBC (1962; 1968; 1969), Life Magazine (1964), The Paris Review (1967), and The New York Times--as well as other mainstream-&-ubiquitous news empires--feature alongside the so-called "Anonymous" interviews of 1962 and 1972. As Nabokov notes in the book's partially circuitous foreword, the form these musings end up taking is the "...more or less neatly paragraphed essay," -- something he feels "...is the ideal form a written interview should take." A rare-&-desirable Nabokov collectible, not to mention a deeply useful addition to any Nabokov-inclusive collection/library.
