Rochester, NY: University of Rochester Press, 2011. First Edition. Hardcover. "Simultaneously the memoir of a famed composer, conductor, and music educator, and an important historical sourcebook on the American musical scene during the twentieth century and into the twenty-first, the autobiography of Gunther Schuller chronicles the first thirty-five years of this multifaceted and expansive figure's life and work." (from front flap) A memoir-autobiography by Gunther Schuller (1925-2015), the acclaimed & award-winning American musician, composer, conductor, academician & author. Schuller's long & prolific career is most famous for his pioneering of what he termed the "Third Stream," which combined elements of progressive jazz & classical music styles. As noted above, Schuller here focuses on his eventful & inventive early years, including his own works & collaborations with the Modern Jazz Quartet, Frank Sinatra & many other legendary musical figures. With an introduction by Joan Shelley Rubin, the noted history scholar, professor & author; extensive notes following text & a section of captioned historic photographs. Hardcover in unclipped dust jacket, first edition, first printing as strongly implied on copyright page in the manner of academic presses, with "First published 2011" stated on copyright page, number sequence "2011028317" thereon, & no reference to subsequent printings. This appears to be the last of Schuller's books published in his lifetime, & the full story of his life & work (he lived for nearly 55 more productive years after the conclusion of this volume) has yet to be published. From the collection of George V. Buehler (1933-2020), who was a prominent real estate developer & collector in Massachusetts & Arizona. We found & have retained two documents relating to Buehler's purchase of (apparently two copies of) this item in 2011 & 2015, folded & in very fine condition, between blank rear endpaper & paste-down. A beautiful "door stopper" production; a key Schuller collectible at the crossroads & vanguard of American musical history with distinguished provenance. Book in very fine condition with only some tiny bumps, creases at edges & corners of front, back covers & spine; tiny bumps at upper corners of a few page leaves; otherwise substantially mint inside & out. Dust jacket fine with a bit of rubbing, sparse spotting & a few faint scratches to esp. front, back covers, spine & flaps; light wear & some tiny bumps, creases at edges & corners of same. Very Fine / Fine. [Item #4838]
