The Maltese Falcon (Facsimile First Edition)

Shelton, CT: The First Edition Library/ Alfred A. Knopf, Inc., n/d (c. 2000). First Edition Thus. Hardcover. "Sam Spade is a knock-out detective and yet, personally, he cares not a hoot for the law; so little so that constantly is he just on the verge of being pulled by the 'Frisco cops. When Spade goes out after anything neither lead slugs, women, nor the Old Nick himself can stop him from landing it. Here he sets himself to outwit three contending factions who all want the same thing which he also wants and it is only natural, therefore, that many murders strew his winding wake, that several persons suddenly fall doped and a great liner burns mysteriously to the water's edge." (from front flap) The iconic, quintessential hard-boiled detective novel by Dashiell Hammett (1894-1961), the canonical American writer whose works have been enshrined in the Library of America series. Originally published in 1930, this novel was the basis for one of the greatest classic films, John Huston's 1941 production starring Humphrey Bogart as Sam Spade, the world-weary but ultimately honorable (in his own way) San Francisco private eye. Hammett's evocation of the pursuit of a fabled object by a group of unforgettably colorful crooked characters at odds with each other, with Spade cunningly dodging their crossfire while methodically discovering the truth, is in the eternal pantheon of literary & cinematic mythology. Here we offer a precise facsimile of the first edition of 1930, an exemplary production of The First Edition Library with faithful attention to all original details & materials. Hardcover in dust jacket, first edition thus. Additionally, this all-but-exact reproduction is housed in a handsome slipcase illustrated with the front & back dust jacket covers on respective boards. The actual first edition of this volume in original dust jacket is among the most valuable of them all (right up there with The Great Gatsby et al.), a veritable "Maltese Falcon" indeed- this edition is the closest us earthling Third Minds can get to the original, & is itself quite scarce. Book in very fine condition with only a touch of scuffing to dark grey-dyed upper edge of text block, otherwise substantially mint inside & out. Dust jacket very fine with only very slight wear, a few bumps & creases to edges & corners of front, back covers & spine esp. upper spine-edge with miniscule loss of surface paper. Slipcase very fine with only a few tiny bumps to edges & corners; faint, non-penetrating scratches at outer bottom panel. Very Fine / (Dust Jacket & Slipcase) Very Fine. [Item #4861]
