New York, NY: The Museum of Modern Art, New York, 2013. First Edition. Hardcover. "Henri Labrouste (1801-1875) is one of the rare nineteenth-century architects to have been adopted as a precursor and hero by architects of nearly every generation since his death, lionized as much by modernists as postmodernists, and more recently by those engaged in exploring new horizons of the relationship between architectural form and technology. The two magisterial glass-and-iron reading rooms he built in Paris during the 1840s through the 1860s gave form to the idea of the modern library as a great collective civic space, and his influence was immediate and long lasting on the development of the modern library as well as on the exploration of new paradigms of space, materials, and luminosity in places of public assembly." (from jacket back cover) A volume of essays & images spanning the life & works of Henri Labrouste, the great French architect whose ingenious monuments continue to inspire & influence public places & planning to this day. Published in conjunction with a major, comprehensive exhibit on Labrouste held at the Museum of Modern Art in NYC during 2013, this is a large, awesome & beautiful production befitting the indeed "magisterial" works of architecture conceived & completed by its subject. Chiefly authored by Corrine Belier, Chief Curator of Architecture at the Cite de l'architecture et du patrimoine in Paris; Barry Bergdoll, Chief Curator of Architecture and Design at MoMa; & Marc Le Coeur, a noted historian & research associate at the Bibliotheque nationale de France, the reading room of which is one of Labrouste's most breathtaking creations. With essays by leading critics & authorities, & 225 sumptuously reproduced photographs & illustrations of Labrouste's plans, rooms & buildings. Hardcover in unclipped dust jacket, first edition, presumed first printing with no reference to further printings on copyright page. A most desirable & rewarding collectible for students/ practitioners of architecture, or for that matter all appreciators of Greatness.
