Cambridge, MA: The Belknap Press of Harvard University Press, 2015. First American Edition. Hardcover. "The French Resistance has an iconic status in the struggle to liberate Nazi-occupied Europe, but its story is entangled in myths. Gaining a true understanding of the Resistance means recognizing how its image has been carefully curated through a combination of French politics and pride, ever since jubilant crowds celebrated Paris's liberation in August 1944. Robert Gildea's penetrating history of resistance in France during World War II sweeps aside "the French Resistance" of a thousand clichés, showing that much more was at stake than freeing a single nation from Nazi tyranny." (from front flap) A broad, deep history of the legendary French Resistance, its internecine conflicts & its place in the larger milieu of European resistance during the Second World War. The author, Robert Gildea, is an acclaimed, prolific & prize-winning British historian & academician at Oxford University. With a section of captioned historical photographs; extensive notes & bibliography following text. Hardcover in unclipped dust jacket, first American edition of 2015 preceded by (or published simultaneously with) the first UK edition during the same year, first printing with "2015018188" stated on copyright page. This American edition, a production of the venerable Belknap-Harvard academic imprint, appears to be far more scarce than the UK edition. From the collection of George V. Buehler (1933-2020), who was a prominent real estate developer & collector in Massachusetts & Arizona. We have retained several printed-out documents relating to Buehler's research & purchase of this volume in 2016, folded & in very fine condition. A major & very important study of this critical topic in history, likely the most comprehensive ever yet written; a rewarding collectible in its rarest form & with distinguished provenance. Book in very fine condition, substantially mint inside & out. Dust jacket very fine with only several tiny spot-stains (or sticker-removal residue?) at lower-left area of front cover, very slightly effecting last two letters of "the" in title; a few tiny bumps & creases at edges & corners of front, back covers, spine & flaps. Very Fine / Very Fine. [Item #4883]
