Postcard: This Cat Eats Everything

San Francisco, CA: White Star Graphics, 1987. First Printing. Single Sheet. Signed by Jack Micheline. Like his fellow haloed street-bard, Bob Kaufman, Beat troubadour Jack Micheline (1929-1998) could also be found wandering the streets of New York during the Beat Generation’s breakthrough halcyon-heyday of the mid-late 1950s. Unlike Kaufman, however, Micheline made significant contact with the Mount Rushmore Beats, and did so during the period in which their cardinal contributions saw publication. This contact came in the form of Jack Kerouac’s 'Barstool Blurb’ for Micheline’s debut work of 1958, “River of Red Wine.” As the poet, publisher, & organizer Thomas Rain Crowe relayed in “Starting from San Francisco: The Baby Beat Generation and the Second San Francisco Renaissance” (Ann Arbor, MI: Third Mind Books, 2018; See Item #3075; 3071), “There was no one like Micheline—either in regard to his personality or his poetry. / … / He personified the Beats for me—or what I perceived as being “the Beat ethic…He was a kind of fantastic personality, larger than life.” That exuberance shines through, even in "This Cat Eats Everything," a painting completed in 1987 by thee quintessential "downtrodden saint." The work is here reproduced on a sturdy postcard published by the San Francisco-based press, White Star Graphics, in 1987. The postcard is additionally signed by Micheline on verso, just above printer’s notice at lower left-hand margin. The poet’s signature, in black felt pen ink, reads: “Jack Micheline.” Postcard in very fine condition with only slight rubbing & minute shelf-wear to fine-edges.
