New York, NY: Harry N. Abrams, Inc., 1997. First Edition. Hardcover. "This book presents in depth the work of George Hurrell, the photographer who more than anyone else was responsible for inventing the Hollywood "Glamour" portrait- the essential publicity tool for the major studios during the Golden Age of the movies. The book traces his immense impact on the portrayal of the leading stars year by year, from his arrival in California in 1925 until his departure in 1943. During that time he photographed all of the greatest personalities, at Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, Warner Brothers, and Columbia as well as independently. It was Hurrell, with his Rembrandtesque lighting and his daringly dramatic poses, who transformed the Hollywood star, not simply into a figure of high fashion, but into a kind of erotic icon- a romantic being presented in such exalted terms as to seem almost godlike. The visual power of his portraits shaped the careers of many stars as much as did their actual films." (from front flap) A spectacular collection of 275 "duotone" images by George Hurrell (1904-1992), the great American photographer whose classic black-&-white portraits of movie stars (including Joan Crawford, Jean Harlow, Humphrey Bogart, Errol Flynn et al.) defined Hollywood glamour during its Golden Age, & remain in our TCM-watching collective consciousness. With preface & text throughout by Mark A. Viera, an acclaimed author & photographer who has carried the torch of the Hurrell style. A large & lavish production of the venerable Abrams imprint, quite worthy of its subject- whose later portfolio, interestingly, includes pop-rock album covers. Hardcover in unclipped dust jacket, first edition, first printing with "96-27184" stated on copyright page & no reference to further printings thereon. From the collection of George V. Buehler (1933-2020), who was a prominent real estate developer & collector in Massachusetts & Arizona. We found & have retained, between blank rear endpaper & paste-down, several printed-out documents relating to Buehler's purchase of this item during 2012 & subsequent research in 2015, two sheets, one flat & one once-folded, both in very fine condition with only minor edgewear & creasing. A most handsome "coffee table" collectible for the High-Hollywood & artful photography devotee, with distinguished provenance. Book in fine condition with only several very small areas of staining at upper side edge of text block (otherwise all exterior substantially mint). Interior fine with small square area at blank front endpaper with residue (presumably from sticker removal) over which we have placed a protective stick-note; slight bleeding of stains noted above onto blank upper side edges of last fifteen-or-so page leaves and a few others. Dust jacket very fine with only a touch of rubbing to front, back covers & spine; very slight wear & some tiny bumps, creases at edges & corners of same & flaps. Fine / Very Fine. [Item #4912]
