The Loved One

London, England: The Folio Society, 1993. First Edition Thus. Hardcover. The classic satirical novel by Evelyn Waugh (1903-1966), the legendary & prolific British author. First published in the UK during 1948, The Loved One: An Anglo-American Tragedy is a bitingly witty spoof of the American funeral industry, as well as the clash of British & American cultures, which Waugh observed while on a sojourn to Hollywood. The "Whispering Glades" referred to in the novel is a thinly disguised version of the famous Forest Lawn Cemetery in Glendale, California. Among Waugh's most popular works, this novel has appeared in many editions, & is the basis for the acclaimed 1965 film version with screenplay by Terry Southern & Christopher Isherwood featuring many disparate stars including John Gielgud, Robert Morley, Milton Berle, Tab Hunter & even Liberace. Here we have the Folio Society edition published in 1993, featuring frontispiece & seven interior color illustrations by Beryl Cook (1926-2008), the very popular & prolific British artist; & an excerpt from noted British author Christopher Sykes' (1907-1986) 1975 biography of Waugh relating to the novel's inspirations & circumstances, which serves as an introduction. An exemplary, sumptuous Folio production, large hardcover in slipcase, first edition thus, presumed first printing with no references to further printings. A beautiful & collectible version of Waugh's hilariously macabre, penetratingly insightful take on British & American society. Book in very fine condition with only a hint of fading to bright-orange cloth spine; a few very small, faint scratches to bright red flaming heart illustration on front cover; otherwise substantially mint inside & out. Slipcase relatively good-to-near-fine with very mild rubbing, faint scratching to blank maroon-red outer surfaces; very slight wear at outer edges & corners; lower portion of back cover & bottom edge with moderate-to-significant spotting, a few short, faint scratches, tiny non-penetrating dimples & short blue ink(?) marks. Very Fine / Good- Near Fine. [Item #4915]
