Huncke's Journal (Illustrator's Copy with Original Photograph, Handwritten Letter & Additional Ephemera)

New York, NY: Poet's Press, 1965. First Edition. Stapled Wrappers. From the collection of illustrator Erin Black Matson, & with very important ephemera including an original photograph of Herbert Huncke & a Huncke manuscript note. This classic collection of stories from Beat Generation legend Herbert Huncke (1915-1996) was published by Diane di Prima's Poet's Press in New York City during 1965. Di Prima was among the first to see the immense naturalistic talent of a writer such as Huncke; his raw, gritty, unrelenting tales are replicated with an honesty that could be analogized to James Joyce's Dubliners. Offered here is the true first edition, first printing, as proven by the absence of Allen Ginsberg's introduction, which was added for the second printing. In 1965, Huncke was just beginning to garner acclaim as a writer- he was reading these stories at places including the Cafe Le Metro & the Gaslight with the likes of Ed Sanders and other NYC countercultural staples during the thriving Mimeograph revolution. This copy is from the collection of the late Erin Black Matson, who drew the eleven illustrations that are reproduced in this edition & is credited on the title page. Artist-poet Erin, along with her then-husband the acclaimed poet & educator Clive Matson, were members of the Beat Generation-morphing into the hippie counterculture in NYC right at the time of this work. The Matsons were colleagues & protégés (in lifestyle as much as literature) of Huncke, di Prima, Bonnie & Ray Bremser et al. Included with this illustrator's copy as we received it is a group of outstandingly significant ephemera, nine pieces in addition to the volume, including: An original photograph of Huncke (never heretofore published to our knowledge); a cursive ink manuscript note from Huncke to Erin, two small notebook pages with writing on all four sides, in envelope with Erin's notes on front (undated, circa 1960s); Erin's hand-written list of the illustrations in this edition with her commentary (which among other points indicates that they were not all placed coordinating with the stories they relate to according to Erin); several writings, typed or hand-written, mostly copied from the originals, with very interesting anecdotes concerning Huncke, the Journal, Erin's illustrations, Panna Grady (the well-known Beat matron to whom the Journal is dedicated) in relation to William S. Burroughs, John Wieners & Irving Rosenthal, & more. Please see our images of all this fascinating & most desirable ephemera, all of which is in very good-very fine condition as shown. Book & ephemera housed in a large envelope with "Huncke's Journal" hand-written by Erin on front, in good condition. The cornerstone collectible of the Huncke oeuvre, with singularly exceptional provenance & ephemera. The altogether fair-to-good condition of the Journal reflects its long possession & use by Erin, who was a tried-&-true Beat-Bohemian to the end: Moderate-to-significant rubbing, scratching, discoloration & spot-staining to front, back covers & stapled spine; moderate wear, creasing, chipping & browning to edges & corners of same; moderate browning & spot-staining to edges of text block esp. upper area of side-edge; staples in process of rusting with moderate interior bleeding. Interior generally good-to-near-fine with moderate-to-significant rubbing, discoloration & spot-staining to blank blue inner covers; signature of "Laura(?) Bosworth Black" (a relative of Erin we presume) in black ink at upper margin/edge of inner front cover; decreasing echo of medium-size spot-stain (or burn mark?) onto mostly blank upper margins/edges of first ten-or-so page leaves. Fair-Good. [Item #4987]
