Beat Scene No. 23

Beat Scene No. 23

Warwickshire, England: Beat Scene Press, 1995. First Printing. Stapled Wrappers. This vintage number of the indispensable Beat journal published by Kevin Ring in the UK features an interview with John Martin (b. 1930), founder & publisher of the venerable Black Sparrow Press, conducted by Ring. Cult favorite Charles Bukowski's works are famously among the most well-known in the BSP catalog, & Martin's experiences with Bukowski are discussed. Also, the coinciding republication of Bukowski's Shakespeare Never Did This by BSP is noted in an article by Colin Cooper. Other pieces in this issue include the first of two intensive, annotated discographies of Allen Ginsberg's many audio recordings by Jon Rogers; a description of the June 1995 Beat Conference held at the NYU campus by Todd Bauer (this writer attended the previous year's legendary much-longer & larger Conference at that venue); a short history-bibliography of Manhattan's Greenwich Village, a haven for Bohemians including of course the Beats, by Jim Burns; an extensive excerpt of a play about Jack Kerouac & Co., Angels Still Falling, by British playwright Richard Deakin; & as ever much more. With many rare images, contemporary reviews & ads. An early & most collectible issue in our favorite series that always fulfills its front-cover motto: "This is the Beat Generation." In fine condition with light rubbing, scratching & faint creasing to front, back covers & stapled spine; a bit of wear & a few tiny bumps, creases at edges & corners of same. Interior very fine with only tiny bumps at mostly upper corners of some page leaves. Fine. [Item #4994]
