Beat Scene No. 43 (Summer 2003)
Coventry, England: Beat Scene Press, 2003. First Printing. Stapled Wrappers. This vintage 2003 number of the magazine-format Beat Generation journal published by Kevin Ring in the UK features a lengthy anecdotal memoir on cult favorite Richard Brautigan by his close friend Greg Keeler, & two very interesting articles on the legendary Charles Bukowski by Jean Francois Duval & Adrian Manning. Also in this issue is an essay on the fiftieth anniversary of William S. Burroughs' first published book, Junky, by supreme WSB authority (& our good friend, colleague & leader of the European Beat Studies Network) Oliver Harris; an interview with filmmaker & major Beat insider Gordon Ball conducted by Ring; a most insightful essay on five "Defining Beat Moments" by James Birmingham (of Reality Studio fame); tributes to Beat poet Ted Joans, who had died in April of that year, by Jack Foley & Tim Burns (including one of the last photographs taken of Joans in Paris the very month of his death); a profile of the great Beat journal KULCHUR by Burns; an interview with the recently deceased radical San Francisco poet & translator Jack Hirschman conducted by Ring; another (credited to "Beat Scene" but probably conducted by Ring) of filmmaker Jack Shea concerning his documentary about Jack Kerouac, his tragic (non-) relationship with his daughter Jan & the controversies of his literary legacy entitled "Who Owns Jack Kerouac?"; & yet more. With, as ever, a robust section of contemporary reviews, many vintage images throughout & a few ads. Another most rich & rewarding issue in the indispensable series that never fails to build upon its front-cover motto: "This is the Beat Generation." In very fine condition with only very light rubbing, scratching & some faint waving to front, back covers & stapled spine; a bit of wear & some tiny bumps, creases at edges & corners of same; staples in process of rusting with minimal interior bleeding. Interior very fine with only tiny bumps, creases at upper corners of page leaves; miniscule bleeding noted above. Very Fine. [Item #5061]
