Original Collage Artwork by Claude Pelieu (Untitled)

New York, NY: Claude Pelieu, 1998. Original Collage Artwork. Single Sheet. Inscribed & Signed by Claude Pelieu. An original, untitled 1998 collage artwork (appx. 14" x 11") by Claude Pelieu (1934-2002), an acclaimed French artist & writer who along with his wife Mary Beach (1919-2006) was at the Paris-based center of cutting-edge cut-up writing & collage art. He was also the stepfather of Pamela Beach Plymell & therefore the stepfather-in-law of Charles Plymell, Legendary Literary Outlaws Extraordinaire (& our dear friends) from whose collection we obtained this. The Beach-Pelieus intersected ("interzoned"?) & collaborated with the Plymells, William S. Burroughs (who was of course their cut-up mentor & inspiration) & many others. In this work, Pelieu has gathered & overlapped a variety of images, including Marilyn Monroe, cats (& one dog for good measure), foods, automobiles etc. This writer interprets this collage as at least partly a commentary on predatory consumerism. At lower left margin on blank white background, Pelieu has hand-written in pencil: "(signed) Claude Pelieu N.Y. 1998." On verso, below his stamped name, Pelieu has written also in pencil: "9.9 collage/ 2 de Mary ami(?)/ Merci (?)/ Love,/ (signed) Claude." We believe, from what we can understand of this affectionate French-language inscription, that this collage is from a series of which two were gifted by Pelieu to his wife Mary. The outstanding provenance of all Third Mind Books' many Beach, Pelieu & Plymell offerings makes us The Source for collectibles relating to this nonconformist trinity of Bastard Angels (as their friend the great Harold Norse would put it). A unique & original visual cut-up artwork with most distinguished associations & provenance. In very fine condition with only a bit of rubbing, faint scratching to blank white background of recto collage; a few tiny bumps, creases at edges & corners; one line (appx. 2/3") of tape with paper-residue surface below upper edge of verso (not at all effecting stamp or inscription below it, or recto). Very Fine. [Item #5085]
