Milwaukee, WI: Light and Dust Books, 1994. First Edition. Stapled Wrappers. "I learned...from 30 years of observing Allen Ginsberg to try and bring that spontaneity and creativity and pizzazz and élan into your activism, into the social concerns you have, to give them a patina of joy and happiness. Because we cannot be dour, stodgy, robotic claw-mouths out there chewing away on issues. We have to bring our vision of a new world, a better world, and our dancing shoes, into our social concerns." (Ed Sanders, c. 1995). Beat-&-Beyond legend Edward Sanders is undoubtedly one of the most important figures of the Mimeograph Revolution, and a countercultural icon easily comparable to any of the Beat-literary icons of the era. Sanders, who released his first published work, "Poem from Jail" in 1963 (through Lawrence Ferlinghetti's immortal City Lights Books), progressed astonishingly as a publisher, poet, songwriter and social activist over the course of the 1960s. Perhaps no other figure can so authoritatively speak on the development of the early 1960s NYC underground, and particularly of what was happening in the Lower East Side. A great thing about Ed’s work is that, like the great Doors’ keyboardist, Ray Manzarek, Sanders never “lost it.” Offered here is one such testament to his powerfully retained poetic acumen. Proof, as it were, that—as a book on Ann Arbor once [and unrelatedly] wrote—“there still are saints / who tend the ancient flame.” From the collection of our good friend Kevin Ring, publisher of the indispensable Beat Scene magazine & other superb productions (many of which are available here). Pamphlet in stapled wrappers; the first and only printing of this quality, middle-aged assemblage from the indefatigable Sanders. This copy is additionally signed by Sanders in thin, blue pen ink on title page, beneath the poet’s printed name. Signature, in thin, blue pen ink, reads: “Ed Sanders.” In very fine condition with only slightest shelf-wear to fine-edges & corners of front, back covers & select corners (upper right-hand corner of front cover & (corresponding) upper left-hand corner of back cover). Very Fine. [Item #5090]
