New York, NY: Viking Penguin, 1992. First Trade Edition. Hardcover. "August 9, 1984, Thursday. My relationship with cats has saved me from a deadly, pervasive ignorance. When a barn cat finds a human patron who will elevate him to a house cat, he tends to overdo it in the only way he knows: by purring and nuzzling and rubbing and rolling on his back to call attention to himself. Now I find this extremely touching and ask how I could ever have found it a nuisance. All relationships are predicated upon exchange, and every service has its price. When the cat is sure of his position, as Ruski is now, he becomes less demonstrative, which is as it should be." (pg. 46) This late-period work by the Greatest-of-Them-All William S. Burroughs, Founding Father of the Beat Generation-&-Beyond, contains his musings on cats, which fascinated him and appeared in works throughout his storied oeuvre. A delightful & haunting short work in mostly diary-entry format, which reminds this writer of my being nuzzled by WSB's surviving cats on the couch & visiting the grave of his favorite cat Ruski in his backyard during my 1995 visit with WSB at his final home in Lawrence, Kansas. Hardcover in pictorial boards without dust jacket as issued, first trade edition, first printing as indicated by number sequence on copyright page. Schottlaender, A60(b), pg. 19. Preceded only by the now all-but-unobtainable limited edition published in 1986 by the Grenfell Press, signed by both WSB & his cherished friend-&-influence Brion Gysin. An essential, poignant late WSB collectible classic. In very fine condition with only very light rubbing, faint scratching to front, back covers & spine; a few tiny bumps at edges & corners of same; moderate spotting to upper edge of text block (extending to upper edge of back cover). Interior very fine with only large square areas of browning/sunning at paste-downs & endpapers (both sides of latter) which appear to us as age-related or possibly as issued; otherwise substantially mint. Very Fine. [Item #5096]
