Schonebeck, Germany; Marlborough, MA: Moloko Print/ Water Row Books, 2022. Limited First Edition. Softcover. Signed by Oliver Harris. "When William Burroughs mailed Alan Ansen a copy of Naked Lunch on its publication in 1959, he dedicated it to "one of the few who understood Naked Lunch before I did," testifying to the unique role ansen played from the start of Burroughs' career as collaborator, promoter, critic, friend and author of three essays written across three decades. A Burroughs Tryptich pieces together for the first time the backstory to Ansen's three essays which were previously edited into a composite volume in 1986, in order to do justice to the special part Ansen played in making the Burroughs legend." (from front flap) Three essays on the life & work of William S. Burroughs, among the earliest & most definitive ever written, by Alan Ansen (1922-2006), the American expatriate poet-essayist-scholar. Ansen was a key figure in organizing the notorious "notes" strewn about the floor of WSB's residence in Tangier into Naked Lunch, the breakthrough work that brought WSB & the Beat Generation to the attention of the world along with Allen Ginsberg's Howl & Jack Kerouac's On the Road. Edited & with a luminously insightful, archeologically scholarly intoductory essay by Dr. Oliver Harris, foremost Burroughsian authority as well as our esteemed colleague & friend at the European Beat Studies Network (ebsn.eu) of which he is a founder. Harris' introduction is actually slightly longer than the three Ansen essays combined that follow, & is of such importance that we consider this a first edition in its own right, rather than a first edition thus. Softcover in perfect-bound wrappers with flaps, a co-production of the German publisher Moloko Print & Water Row Books, the imprint of our good friend & mentor Jeffrey Weinberg, publisher of the previous 1986 edition. With several vintage photographs of WSB, Ansen & Co. interspersed among texts. One of fifty hand-numbered copies signed by Harris on a special tipped-in card on recto of copyright page, this is copy No. 12/50. An absolutely essential WSB-related instant collectible- we highly recommend that you obtain this rarity while you can. In very fine, as-new condition, substantially mint inside & out except for very slight loss of surface paper at blank black page opposite signature page & a bit of residue at tipped-in limitation/signature card from having separated therefrom (not substantially effecting image thereon), a miniscule flaw as issued. Very Fine. [Item #5113]
