Malanga Shoots Plymell (Silver Edition)
Walkill, NY: Bottle of Smoke Press, 2015. Limited First Edition. Photograph in Envelope. Gerard Malanga, noted associate of Andy Warhol & long-time poet, photographer, filmmaker & archivist, collaborates here with legendary literary outlaw, Charles Plymell (the subject of this unique photographic study) in a unique photographic form called the “ambrotype.” It’s a tad more accurate to say this is a “reflection on the medium of ambrotype” rather than an ambrotype itself, however, because it’s a photograph printed in negative on acetate which replicates the look of an ambrotype. Ambrotype itself is a wet plate collodion process patented in 1854 by James Ambrose Cutting, as indicated on the back of the card contained within. So, to make sure we have this all straight–contained within is a photograph taken by Bill Roberts of Gerard Malanga taking a picture of Charles Plymell. Photograph in Envelope: one of only twenty copies ever issued by the indefatigable Bill Roberts’ Bottle of Smoke Press, this copy being #2/20–likely the lowest limitation not already in institutional or private hands. In very fine condition, completely unopened, with only slightest shelf-wear/bending to fine-edges near top left-hand corner of envelope. Very Fine. [Item #5122]
