Original Concert Poster: Grass Roots, Big Brother & the Holding Company, Buddha from Muir Beach ("A Stone Facade," June 3-4, 1966)
San Francisco, CA: Family Dog Productions, 1966. First Edition, Second Printing. Single Sheet. A poster (appx. 13" x 20&3/8") announcing a concert entitled "A Stone Facade" with performances headlined by the Grass Roots, along with Big Brother & the Holding Company & Buddha from Muir Beach during June 3-4, 1966 at the Avalon Ballroom in San Francisco. The great Spanish-American artist Victor Moscoso (b. 1936) created the artworks & graphics reproduced here (although no facsimile name or signature of the artist is present, see below). According to the Talmudic scholarship we have studied regarding this poster (which is similar in its depth to that of our underground comix from this period), this copy is a second printing, with "(c) Family Dog Productions, 1725 Washington Street, San Francisco" & "No. 11-2" fine-printed below larger-font quote & ticket information at lower margin. King, FD-11-RP-2, pg. 51. King notes: "The central image is a photograph of a gargoyle from the cathedral of Notre Dame in Paris with the city of Paris in the background. Although this poster does not bear the signature of Victor Moscoso in the plate, it is his work. He did not sign it because he was dissatisfied with it artistically. Although Moscoso has a tendency to be very critical of his own work, this poster is from a time when psychedelic poster art was in a very early developmental stage, and it definitely is not an artistic failure when compared to what was being created by the other artists at the same time." Another exemplary relic of the early hippie era that would fully blossom a year later during the "Summer of Love," in its penultimately rarest contemporary form. From the collection of Dion Wright (b. 1937), a most esteemed & prolific artiste & sculptor who was at the center of the scene that produced this & many other iconic posters that define & symbolize a fabled time & place. (see Wright's memoir, Tempus Fugitive, Item No. 5008). In our fussy, eagle-eyed estimation this poster is in relatively very fine condition with only light rubbing & browning at mostly blank white margins/edges outside of letters & images (which are all-but-pristine); a bit of wear, some tiny bumps & a few short, faint creases at/near edges & corners of same. This item is too delicate to be rolled & must be shipped flat to assure no damage, therefore extra shipping costs will be required. Very Fine. [Item #5146]
