Original, Untitled Collage Artwork by Claude Pelieu

New York, NY: Claude Pelieu, 1998. Original Collage Artwork. Single Sheet. Signed by Claude Pelieu. An original, untitled artwork (appx. 11" x 14" in total) by Claude Pelieu (1934-2002), an acclaimed French artist & writer who along with his wife Mary Beach (1919-2006) was at the Paris-based center of cutting-edge cut-up writing & collage art. He was also the stepfather of Pamela Beach Plymell & therefore the stepfather-in-law of Charles Plymell, Legendary Literary Outlaws Extraordinaire (& our dear friends) from whose collection we obtained this. The Beach-Pelieus intersected (or shall we say "interzoned"?) & collaborated with the Plymells, William S. Burroughs (who was of course their cut-up mentor & inspiration) & many others. In this work, Pelieu has placed various images including a hot air balloon with the planet Saturn for its basket, a cat & a Hindu or Buddhist costumed child-Diety figure over the background of a classic painting, likely by Bruegel, upon a board-sheet of construction paper. On otherwise blank white verso, an oblong stamp has been affixed at lower right area with Pelieu's hand-written signature, place & date in pencil as follows: "(signed) Claude Pelieu/ N.Y. 98." Below this is a much smaller sticker on which "CP(presumably Charles Plymell)/ 59" is hand-written in thick red ink. The outstanding provenance of all Third Mind Books' many Beach, Pelieu & Plymell offerings makes us The Source for collectibles relating to this nonconformist trinity of Bastard Angels (as their friend the great Harold Norse would put it). A unique & original visual cut-up artwork with most distinguished association & provenance. In very fine condition with only a bit of rubbing, faint scratching to blank white background of recto collage; a few tiny bumps, creases at edges & corners; a touch of rubbing to blank white verso, stickers thereon noted above. Very Fine. [Item #5148]
