Original Concert Poster: Big Brother & the Holding Company, Oxford Circle, Bo Diddley, Sons of Adam ("Dollar Bill," August 5-6, 1966)

San Francisco, CA: Family Dog Productions, 1966. First Edition, Second Printing. Single Sheet. An oblong poster (appx. 23&3/4" x 10&1/8") announcing a series of concerts with performances headlined by Big Brother & the Holding Company, along with Oxford Circle, Bo Diddley & Sons of Adam, during August 5-6, 1966 at the Avalon Ballroom in San Francisco. The acclaimed American artist Stanley Mouse (b. Stanley George Miller, 1940) created the artwork & graphics reproduced here, in collaboration with the great American poster & album cover artist Alton Kelley (1940-2008, known as "Kelley"), & "Poster Design: Kelley-Mouse!" in facsimile hand-lettering is found just below green border of image at lower right margin/corner, below currency-style graphics & "6" (see image). Also credited for "Lights" with candle motif is Bill Ham, among the foremost pioneers of the psychedelic light shows so exemplary of these early "acid rock" happenings, & who as with Mouse is still active as of this writing. According to the Talmudic scholarship we have studied regarding this poster (which is similar in its depth to our underground comix from this period), this copy is a second printing, with "(c) Family Dog Productions, 1725 Washington Street, San Francisco" & "No. 19-2" fine-printed at otherwise blank white lower margin; omission of printer's credit. King, FD-19-RP-2, pgs. 64-65. King writes: "The central image is another use of the photograph of the sad eyed Native American man wearing a top hat and with a joint in his mouth which is the basis of the Family Dog logo. This time Mouse and Kelley have recycled for their own purposes the most famous image in our culture, money. This poster was created to resemble U.S. currency with the dates of the concert in the corners instead of the denominations of the bill and the central photograph from the Family Dog logo in the center instead of a former President of the United States. One of the intentions of Mouse and Kelley with many of their images was to poke fun at, to satirize the materialistic pretensions of the mass culture." (pgs. 64-65). Another legendary (particularly in its shape & concept) relic of the early psychedelic era that would come to full fruition the following year during the "Summer of Love," in its penultimately rarest contemporary form. From the collection of Dion Wright (b. 1937), a most respected & prolific artiste & sculptor who was at the center of the scene that produced this & the many other iconic posters that symbolize a fabled time & place. In our experienced & sharp-eyed estimation, this poster is in near-fine verging on fine condition with mild-to-moderate rubbing, browning & creasing of mostly blank white margins/edges (with image clost-to-pristine); mild-to-moderate wear & some tiny bumps, creases at edges & corners incl. miniscule loss of paper. This item is too delicate to be rolled & must be shipped flat to assure no damage, therefore extra shipping costs will be required. Near Fine- Fine. [Item #5187]
