New York, NY: Ballantine Books/ Random House, Inc., 1984. First Edition. Hardcover. "1984, the year "celebrated" in George Orwell's classic dystopian novel, is finally upon us. Despite the dire predictions of Orwell, Clarke finds the future is not necessarily gloomy. In this extraordinary collection of his articles, essays, and speeches, Arthur C. Clarke, citizen of the world, expounds on some of the world's enormously serious problems: war and peace, the frontiers of space, the need for global communications, etc. Then, in the more personal pieces, Clarke, citizen of Sri Lanka, takes on subjects near and dear to him in a series of revealing and delightful essays...An often diverting, always stimulating and informative look at today's world and the promise of tomorrow through the eyes of one of the world's most original thinkers." (from front flap) A collection of contemporary writings by Arthur C. Clarke (1917-2008), the great British-born writer, inventor & television personality perhaps most famous for co-writing the screenplay for 2001: A Space Odyssey with the iconic film's director, Stanley Kubrick. Brilliantly prolific & prophetic, Clarke wrote fiction & non-fiction about the furthest scientific advances & speculations, as well as on many other topics, during his long career. Hardcover in unclipped, first-issue dust jacket (with "FPT" & 14.95 price printed on front flap, "2/84" on rear flap), "First Edition: February 1984" as stated on copyright page, first printing as indicated by number sequence thereon. So, now that Orwell's long-anticipated year is now almost four decades in the past as of this writing, how do Clarke's assessments & predictions hold up? You be the judge, Third Mind Reader. A significant Clarke collectible, in relatively fine condition: Book with only a touch of rubbing, fading to front, back red boards & black cloth spine (gilt letters & graphics on spine completely bright & intact); very light wear at edges & corners of same; light spotting at side & lower edges of text block (the former untrimmed as issued); more pronounced at upper edge of same. Interior fine with irregular upper edges, slight-to-moderate loss of paper at blank upper margins/edges of eleven page leaves (pgs. 211-228, all-but-certainly a slight flaw as issued); one very short, closed horizontal tear at blank side margin/edge of one leaf (pgs. 221-222); very small areas of spot-stain bleeding at/near lower corners of a few leaves. Dust jacket very fine with light rubbing, faint scratching to front, back covers, spine & flaps; a bit of wear & a few tiny bumps, creases at edges & corners of same. Fine / Very Fine. [Item #5239]
