Transit, Issue No. 21 (Spring, 2009)

Coventry, England: Beat Scene Press, 2009. First Printing. Stapled Wrappers. A blast from the Beat-historical, Small Press scholarly past is Issue 21 of "Transit Magazine," -- a onetime offshoot of the Kevin Ring's flagship "Beat Scene Magazine" founded, initially, to provide more publishing space for poetry and fiction submissions (as opposed to the casual masterworks of Beat Scholarship that together comprise the "meat & potatoes" of Beat Scene Magazine, if you will. Kevin could just not keep away from stacking Transits with the same type of high-tier Beat-literary scholarship that "Beat Scene, proper" made its name by publishing. Kevin himself is first among these productive & impassioned contributors, and here Ring contributes his excellent essay on "Yugen," the impeccably pedigreed literary magazine founded by Amiri Baraka (then LeRoi Jones) in the late 1950s-among the premier publications of the Mimeograph Revolution. Ring's Michelin-starred short essay is not all that's exhibited here, however. Appearing beside Beat Scene Magazine's scholar-founder is Ed Sanders ("A Visit to Jack's Memorial Park"); David Meltzer (excerpts from his excellent [and quite nearly book-length] poem, "When I Was a Poet"); Jack Hirschman ("V.I. Lenin"), Dan Fante ("April 2009"); & Barry Gifford "The Poet's House"). Chapbook in stapled wrappers: a first printing of the 21st issue of Ring's retired "Transit Magazine," -- yet another affordably delectable collectible from the one-&-only Beat Scene Press. In very fine condition with only slightest shelf-wear, bumping to fine-edges & corners of front, back covers; a couple low-impact exhibits of light rubbing to same; staples clean at interior, with only faintest exhibit of rusting/spotting (wear too faint to call justifiably call "bleeding") to staples at exterior, else pristine. Very Fine. [Item #5242]
