Bebop Buddhist Ecstasy: Saroyan's Influence on Kerouac and the Beats

San Francisco, CA: Sore Dove Press, 2010. Limited First Edition. Stapled Wrappers. Signed by Lawrence Ferlinghetti & David Stephen Calonne. An essay by David Stephen Calonne, the prolific author, educator & scholar who is our good friend & esteemed colleague at the European Beat Studies Network (ebsn.eu). The subject of this essay is the deep influence of William Saroyan (1908-1981), the great Armenian-American playwright & novelist, upon Jack Kerouac (1922-1969), Founding Father of the Beat Generation; & the sometimes uncannily parallel circumstances of their respective lives & works. With an introduction by Lawrence Ferlinghetti (1919-2021), the iconic Beat-&-Beyond poet, publisher & bookseller who knew & was also greatly influenced by Saroyan; & extensive footnotes. Chapbook in stapled wrappers, one of a total edition of 125 copies, this appears to be among the 50 copies that were to be numbered & signed by Calonne. While there is no number, Calonne & Ferlinghetti have both hand-written their signatures in black ink at colophon- we therefore conclude that this is an author's copy or proof. With front cover illustration by Soheyl Dahi, who also designed & printed this beautiful production. From the collection of Kevin Ring, publisher of the indispensable Beat Scene magazine & chapbook series (many of which are available here), & our good friend across the pond in the UK. An outstandingly rare & rewarding Beat-scholarly collectible, with very significant signatures & distinguished provenance. In very fine condition with only a few tiny bumps at corners of covers & a few page leaves; otherwise substantially mint inside & out. Very Fine. [Item #5257]
