Original Concert Poster: Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band, Charlatans (August 26-27, 1966)

San Francisco, CA: Family Dog Productions, 1966. First Edition, Third Printing. Single Sheet. A poster (appx. 14&1/8" x 20&1/4") announcing a concert with performances headlined by Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band, along with the Charlatans, during August 26-27, 1966 at the Avalon Ballroom in San Francisco. The acclaimed American artist Stanley Mouse (b. Stanley George Miller, 1940) created the artwork & graphics reproduced here, in collaboration with the noted American poster & album cover artist Alton Kelley (1940-2008, known as "Kelley"), & "Poster: Mouse! Studios" in facsimile hand-lettering is found just below thin blue border of image near lower right curved-corner. According to the Talmudic scholarship we have studied regarding this poster (which is similar in its depth to that of our underground comix from this period), this copy is a third printing, with "No. 23-3" & "(c) Family Dog Productions, 1725 Washington Street, San Francisco" fine-printed at lower white margin below ticket outlet information. King, FD-23-RP-2, pg. 70. (the first two original printings done in quick succession are noted in one entry, thus the "2" rather than "3" here). King writes: "The central image is a drawing of three fat older men who are singing. They are clothed as if ready for bed." (pg. 70) Another iconic relic of the early psychedelic era that would fully blossom the following year during the "Summer of Love," in its third-rarest, near-contemporary form. From the collection of Dion Wright (b. 1937), a most respected & prolific artiste & sculptor who was at the center of the scene that produced this & the many other collectible posters that symbolize a legendary time & place (see Wright's memoir, Tempus Fugitive, item No. 5008). In our alert & experienced estimation, this poster is in relatively very fine condition with only mild rubbing at mostly blank white margins/edges esp. near corners; a bit of wear & a few tiny bumps, creases at thin edges & corners. Image is extremely bright & substantially pristine. This item is too delicate to be rolled & must be shipped flat to assure no damage, therefore extra shipping costs will be required. Very Fine.
