New York, NY: Henry Holt and Company, 1988. First Edition. Hardcover. Signed & Inscribed by Edward Abbey. "The Fool's Progress is the story of Henry Holyoak Lightcap's uncertain advance through life, recounted during a 3,500-mile journey from the arid wasteland of Tucson, Arizona, to the "green, fuzzy, mist-infested hills" of a fictional Stump Creek, West Virginia. The journey- Henry is accompanied by his dying dog, Solstice- takes place in April 1980; the life journey begins over half a century earlier, with the "mishap of birth," continuing as a series of adventurous episodes, amorous and otherwise, ranging from West Virginia to Europe to western America and back. Picaresque in form, personal in style, unique in point of view, The Fool's Progress can best and only be summarized, in the author's words, as "an Edward Abbey kind of novel." Nobody else could have written such a book." (from front flap) The final novel published during the lifetime of Edward Abbey (1927-1989), the great American author-anarchist who we perceive as an explosive cross between Henry David Thoreau & Hunter S. Thompson. Hardcover in unclipped first-issue dust jacket (with $19.95 price, "1088" & "mist" instead of later-corrected "myth" printed on front flap as quoted above; "Mickey" instead of later-corrected "Becky" on rear flap), first edition as stated on copyright page, first printing as indicated by number sequence thereon. On the blank front endpaper, Abbey has hand-written his bold signature, a rather cryptic one-word inscription & date during the year (& very close to the time) of publication: "(Signed) Edward Abbey/ Careful/ 12-4-88." A classic late Abbey collectible in its rarest original form & with a spectacular signature-inscription dated only just over three months before the author's death. Book in fine condition with only a bit of rubbing to front, back cover boards & cloth spine (with gilt lettering on spine completely bright & intact except for publisher), very mild wear & some tiny bumps, creases at edges & corners of same incl. slight fading of black cloth; mild rubbing to edges of text block esp. upper edge; one small circular blue stain at lower edge of text block near spine (possibly a remainder mark, though jacket unclipped); several much smaller light blue streak-stains at same. Interior very fine with only tiny bumps & faint creases at mostly upper corners, side edges of a few page leaves. Dust jacket fine with very slight rubbing, browning & occasional light spot-staining to front, back covers, spine & flaps; mild wear & some tiny bumps, creases at edges & corners of same incl. miniscule loss of surface paper at some corners.
