Where You Once Belonged

ISBN: 0671659030
New York, NY: Summit Books, 1990. First Edition. Hardcover. Signed by Kent Haruf. "Kent Haruf's Where You Once Belonged is in the finest tradition of American storytelling. Spare and resonant, it is the tale of the betrayal of a small Colorado town by its local hero, and of the town's insidious revenge. Everyone loved Jack Burdett. He was the best football player his town had ever seen. His high school friends envied him, Wanda Jo Evans adored him, grown men slapped him on the back. Even after he disappeared, his neighbors thought of it as a kind of joke, just another installment in the ongoing legend that followed him about town. But Jack's greed and arrogance have tragic consequences for Holt and its citizens..." (from front flap) The second novel by Kent Haruf (1943-2014), the critically acclaimed, popular & award-winning novelist. Here, Kent followed up his quintessentially old-West American characters & saga unfolded in his first novel, The Tie That Binds (1984, see our item No. 4953) with an equally compelling, disturbing story which takes place in a more contemporary setting. Hardcover in unclipped dust jacket, first edition, first printing as indicated by number sequence on copyright page. On the title page, below his printed name, Haruf has hand-written his signature in bold black ink. From the collection of George V. Buehler (1933-2020), who was a prominent real estate developer & collector in Massachusetts & Arizona. We found & have retained, between blank rear endpaper & paste-down, a printed-out document regarding Buehler's purchase of this volume during 2015, folded once horizontally & in very fine condition. A classic collectible by the Methodist minister's son who became a Great American Novelist, in its rarest original form & enriched by the late author's signature as well as distinguished provenance. Book in very fine condition with only light fading & a hint of wear to grey front & rear cover boards (silver-gilt lettering, graphics at (pristine red cloth) spine completely bright & intact); otherwise substantially mint inside & out. Dust jacket very fine with only a bit of rubbing to front, back covers & spine; a few tiny bumps, creases at edges & corners of same & flaps; light browning mostly at blank margins/edges of flaps. Very Fine / Very Fine. [Item #5334]
