Santa Rosa, CA: Black Sparrow Press, 1995. First Trade Softcover Edition. Softcover. Signed by the Legendary Poet, Publisher, & Counterculture Pioneer, Ed Sanders with Most Important Association: to His Closest Friend (and Fellow, Co-Founding Member of The Fugs), Tuli Kupferberg. “Who was this man / called Chekhov / in the time-mist / Who was this very energetic guy / from a little grain-port / on the Sea of Azov? / We glimpse him / in his stories and plays, / in the 4,000 letters that survived / and in the words of Gorky, / Bunin, Suvorin, his sister Maria, / his brother Mikhail and Alexander / and a few hundred others / The life of a genius…” (Pg. 1, Excerpted from “The Phantom from Taganrog). TMB is proud to offer this copy of Ed Sanders' (b. 1939) 1995 work, “Chekhov,” -- considered something of a minor classic by Sanders aficionados. Sanders’ reportage is distinguished by a certain inverse muscularity. This muscularity is evident at both of its poles—the trench-working journalistic ethos embodied in the classic essay, “Investigative Poetry” (1976), and the belly-laugh -baiting, countercultural Joke Turret that was Sanders’ “Fuck You / A Magazine of the Arts.” Chekhov being the subject matter here considered, it is heavier on ruminative profundities than dick jokes; something all gathered before this volume have the wherewithal to presume. We are, as is always the case when graced with Sanders’ deeds & presence, made both culturally richer, and wiser for it. First Trade Softcover Edition (limitation unstated): “Printed March 1995 in Santa Barbara / & Ann Arbor for the Black Sparrow Press by / Mackintosh Typography & Edwards Brothers Inc.” Signed, in thin, black pen by the legendary countercultural marauder to his cohort-compatriot & Right-Hand Man, Tuli Kupferberg (“the World’s Oldest Hippie,” as Allen Ginsberg used to say). Sanders’ signature reads: “For Tuli / w/Love / Ed / ’95.” In near fine condition with only minute-to-moderate shelf-wear, bumping to fine-edges & corners of front, back covers & spine; some light, fleck-like chipping at select locales along same; variant exhibits of age-toning, light browning & yellowing to same. Near Fine. [Item #5337]
