New York, NY: The Langwell Hotel, n/d (c. 1938). First or Early Printing. Folded Brochure-Map. "The Langwell is a modern, Fire-proof Hotel recently renovated and refurnished throughout, located...in the very Heart of Times Square which embodies the Theatre and Business Centers for which New York is justly noted. Its close proximity to everything, particularly to all Railroad Stations and Steamship Piers makes it unusually advantageous to the traveling public as well as those seeking a permanent home...We especially seek the patronage of Ladies traveling alone." (from "Description and Location of Hotel" panel) A vintage brochure-map (appx. 22" x 17&1/2" unfolded, 4" x 9" folded) published by the long-gone Langwell Hotel "At the Crossroads of the World" in Manhattan's Times Square, featuring "An Aerial View of New York City Showing Points of Interest" photographed from an aircraft by Aerial Explorations, Inc. including a numbered key column of those Points (Chrysler Building, Empire State Building etc.). Of note is that among the various Buroughs & (mostly, centrally) Manhattan neighborhoods identified on the aerial image is "The Ghetto" written over the Lower East Side. No date is referred to, but the previous owners of this item acquired it on their travels during 1938, & that year is hand-written in ink near upper right edge/corner of front panel. A rare & fascinating relic which captures an historic moment in the ever-changing, roiling phenomenon of NYC. In relatively good-to-near-fine condition with mild-to-moderate rubbing, light browning, scratching & occasional spotting to surfaces; mild wear & some tiny bumps, creases at all edges & corners; a few mostly closed, short tears at some fold-corners; several very small holes at blank fold between front panel & "How to Reach/ The Langwell Hotel" panel; very small blue ink mark at upper right edge of latter panel; neat separation of front panel with above panel (part of a subway network map). Including previous owners' envelope with date & information hand-written in black felt-tip ink. Good- Near Fine. [Item #5360]
