Broadside: The Statue of Saint Francis (Signed & Numbered Edition)

San Francisco, CA: Sore Dove Press, 2009. Limited First Printing. Single Sheet. “They were putting up the statue / of Saint Francis / in front of the church / of Saint Francis / in the city of San Francisco / in a little side street / just off the Avenue / where no birds sang / and the sun was coming up on time / in its usual fashion / and just beginning to shine” begins Lawrence Ferlinghetti’s (1919-2021) iconic ninth poem (“#9”) from “A Coney Island of the Mind,” — here handsomely reprinted by the adept (&-ever commendable) Sore Dove Press, which is helmed by a true craftsman, Soheyl Dahi. The poem, as previously noted, is taken from Ferlinghetti’s legacy-defining (as a poet, anyway) 1958 work, “A Coney Island of the Mind” — a canonically-secure classic of Mid-Century American Literature that still today remains “among the best-selling volumes of poetry by an American poet” (with appx. one million copies in print). Small-format broadside-poster measuring 12.5” x appx. 6” with bottom edge uncut: one of 100 signed & numbered copies printed by Bill Roberts (of Bottle of Smoke Press), & published in March 2009 on the occasion of Ferlinghetti’s 90th birthday. Ferlinghetti signature, in thin black pen ink, reads: “Ferlinghetti.” Limitation, in thin red pen ink, reads: “29/100.” In very fine condition, virtually as new with only slightest shelf-wear to fine-edges, else pristine. Very Fine. [Item #5379]
