Original Concert Poster: Quicksilver Messenger Service, Big Brother & the Holding Company, Country Joe & the Fish (November 25-26, 1966)

San Francisco, CA: Family Dog Productions, 1966. First Edition, Third Printing. Single Sheet. A poster (appx. 14&1/4" x 20&1/8") announcing a "Dance Concert" with performances headlined by the Quicksilver Messenger Service, along with Big Brother & the Holding Company & Country Joe & the Fish, during November 25-26, 1966 at the Avalon Ballroom in San Francisco. The great Spanish-American artist Victor Moscoso (b. 1936) created the artworks & graphics reproduced here, & "Moscoso" in facsimile cursive handwriting is found just below the upper rightmost flower blossom (with a petal therefrom slightly intruding onto the first "o," see image). Also credited for "Lights" are Roger Hillyard & Ben van Meter. Hillyard (b. 1942) was highly involved with the exemplary psychedelic light shows of this era, later became the proprietor of a popular coffee shop & most lately the practicing resident of a Zen Buddhist center- all in San Francisco. Van Meter (b. 1941) was also a major light show producer & noted experimental filmmaker at this time, & still engages in cutting-edge creativity as of this writing. According to the Talmudic scholarship we have consulted regarding this poster (which is similar in its depth to that of our underground comix from this period), this copy is a third printing, with "(c) Family Dog Productions, 1725 Washington Street, San Francisco" & "No. 36-3" printed just above lower edge. King, FD-36-RP-3, pg. 90. King writes: "The central image is several flowers with elaborate, curving stems. The inspiration for this poster came from a seed package. The red varied throughout the press run from a nearly pure red to a more brick red." (pg. 90) This copy is decidedly brick-red, verging on dark orange, at letters & some details-outlines. Another superb example, with Moscoso further arriving toward his ultimate style, of the early psychedelic artworks that would come to full fruition the following year during the "Summer of Love," in its third-rarest near-contemporary form. From the collection of Dion Wright (b. 1937), a most respected & prolific artiste & sculptor who was at the center of the scene that produced this & the many other iconic posters that symbolize a fabled time & place (see Wright's memoir, Tempus Fugitive, item No. 5008). In our sharp-eyed & experienced estimation, this poster is in relatively very fine condition with only mild rubbing & occasional spotting at mostly blank yellow borders outside image (which is bright & substantially mint); a few tiny bumps, creases at edges & corners. This item is too delicate to be rolled & must be shipped flat to assure no damage, therefore extra shipping costs will be required. Very Fine. [Item #5387]
