The Paris Review Vol. 61 No. 228 (Spring 2019)

New York, NY: The Paris Review Foundation, Inc., 2019. First Printing. Softcover. This fairly recent number of the venerable literary, art & cultural journal edited by Emily Nemens (originally co-founded & edited by George Plimpton, 1927-2003) features a lengthy interview with Lawrence Ferlinghetti (1919-2021), the iconic Beat-&-Beyond poet, publisher & City Lights Bookseller, conducted & with an introduction by Garrett Caples. Nearly 99 years old at the time of this interview (he would live to be almost 102), Ferlinghetti offers a near-century's worth of literary anecdotes, wisdom & insight. Preceded by facsimile manuscript page from his poem "Junkman's Obbligato," & with several vintage photographs throughout, including one in the company of Allen Ginsberg & another taken by & with facsimile hand-written caption by Ginsberg. Also in this issue is another interview with the acclaimed (& much younger) American poet Carl Phillips conducted by Rick Barot; numerous contributions of poetry including an excerpt from "Crazy Variations" by the canonical American poet John Ashbery (1927-2017); fiction pieces including the short story "The Murderer" by the great Jewish-American author Isaac Bashevis Singer (1903-1991); a color portfolio of ceramic artworks by Francesca DiMattio interspersed with a critical essay on her work by Major Jackson; & much more. With notes on contributors, contemporary ads. Trade-format softcover in perfect binding. From the collection of Allen Tobias, Ginsberg's assistant beginning in the 1960s, curator, critical writer, all-around Man of Letters & our good friend & colleague at the European Beat Studies Network (ebsn.eu). A rich & rewarding later issue in this most collectible series (see our many other numbers of the Review) of particular interest to Ferlinghetti devotees & with distinguished, relevant provenance. In very fine condition with only very slight rubbing to front, back covers & spine; a touch of wear & some tiny bumps, creases at edges & corners of same. Interior very fine with only tiny bumps at corners of some page leaves. Very Fine. [Item #5390]
