The Kerouac Connection, No. 12 (November 1986)

Bristol, England: The Kerouac Connection, 1986. First Printing. Stapled Wrappers. “Much of the attention showered upon Kerouac’s work is directed towards On the Road, Visions of Cody, and The Dharma Bums, the three books which, if not his most readable, his most enduring and popular. Long overlooked is another Kerouac manifesto, one which I consider to be a companion piece of the aforementioned: Desolation Angels. Scholars have shortchanged Desolation Angels; it failed to make a significant impact upon them and Kerouac fans as well. The book should, however, be given serious consideration in connection to Duluoz’s close adherence to the precepts of Thoreau, which shaped Kerouac’s view of art and the role of the artist” (Tom Korson, “Duluoz, Thoreau, and the Artist’s Ideal in Desolation Angels,” pg. 3). Subtitled a “Beat Brotherhood Newsletter,” here we have the elusive twelfth issue of “The Kerouac Connection,” Dave Moore’s charming Jack Kerouac-focused periodical. As the graphic on the issue’s front cover promises, the spotlight is indeed lathered on Kerouac’s late masterwork, “Desolation Angels,” — and, better yet, in a manner Your Devoted Managing Curator couldn’t find more amicable: with relation to Henry David Thoreau, the great American Transcendentalist. The issue continues with work by Herschel Silverman (“High and Nostalgic on the Beats”); Arthur Winfield Knight (“tuvoti: A HISTORY – Pt. 2”); Jim Burns (“J. Maclaren-Ross”); Dave Cunliffe (“Some British Beat History: Pt. 2”); Letters to the Editor; and book reviews by John Dunton, Gregory Stephenson, Jeanne Conn & Steve Sarrazine before concluding with a short “News” section. Small-format literary magazine-journal in stapled wrappers: the first and only printing of this Kerouac-themed periodical. From the collection of Kevin Ring, publisher of Beat Scene magazine & other indispensable productions (many available here), & our good friend. In fine condition with only minute shelf-wear, bumping to fine-edges & corners of front, back covers; hushed pronouncements of rusting, bleeding to staples, & accompanying slight flecks of bleeding at/near/orbiting same; quarter-size spotting stain at top right-hand corner of back wrapper & extant through magazine (at same spot/locale) but at varying intensities (generally modest); else pristine. Fine. [Item #5438]
