Original Concert Poster: Quicksilver Messenger Service, Miller Blues Band, Other Half (January 6-7, 1967)

San Francisco, CA: Family Dog Productions, 1967. First Edition, First Printing. Single Sheet. A poster (appx. 13" x 19") announcing a "Dance Concert" with performances headlined by the Quicksilver Messenger Service, along with the (Steve) Miller Blues Band & the Other Half, during January 6-7, 1967 at the Avalon Ballroom in San Francisco. The great Spanish-American artist Victor Moscoso (b. 1936) created the artworks & graphics reproduced here, & "Moscoso" in facsimile cursive handwriting is found inside the lower left orange ribbon-border of image, just to the left of the dancing figure's purple feet (see image). Also credited for "Lights" are Roger Hillyard & Ben van Meter. Hillyard (b. 1942) was highly involved with the exemplary psychedelic light shows of this era, later became the proprietor of a popular coffee shop & most lately the practicing resident of a Zen Buddhist center- all in San Francisco. Van Meter (b. 1941) was also a major light show producer & noted experimental filmmaker at this time, & still engages in cutting-edge creativity as of this writing. According to the Talmudic scholarship we have consulted regarding this poster (which is similar in its depth to that of our underground comix from this period), this copy is a first printing, with the ticket information section near lower edge within an orange ("gold" as described by King) oblong rectangle; union label, printer's credit & "42(1)" therein. King, FD-42-OP-1, pg. 97. King writes: "The central image is a woman who is dancing...Although this poster was reprinted, for reasons which are unclear the reprint is extremely rare. This means that any collector assembling a complete set...must have the original printing of this poster, so it is sought-after and expensive." (pg. 97) King has titled this famous poster "Dancing Lady or Chicken Lady." An iconic example of (especially Moscoso's) earlier psychedelic artwork that portends its full blooming later in that key year of 1967 during the "Summer of Love," in its rarest contemporary form. From the collection of Dion Wright (b. 1937), a venerable artiste & sculptor who was at the center of the scene that produced this & the many other dazzlingly beautiful posters that symbolize a legendary time & place (see Wright's memoir, Tempus Fugitive, item No. 5008). In our dedicated, detailed & experienced estimation, this poster is in exceptionally very fine condition with only a few tiny bumps, creases at edges & corners- the entire image & background appears bright & substantially mint. This item is too delicate to be rolled & must be shipped flat to assure no damage, therefore extra shipping costs will be required. Very Fine. [Item #5486]
