Psychedelic Sex

Cologne, Germany: Taschen, 2015. First Edition. Hardcover in Slipcase. There was a moment in time, roughly from 1967 to 1972, where the revolutionary “free love” sexual emancipation movement enmeshed itself into the mind-melting, paisley and tie-dye encrusted recreational drug era, thus giving birth to the age of “psychedelic sex”. While the children of the “greatest generation” were melting their minds and dancing naked in the streets, porno mag publishers were trying to visually recreate the effects of LSD on canvases of carnal desires and marketing the affair to men itching for a taste of the free love movement. Publications like “Way Out”, “Groovy”, or “Where It’s At” all battled it out trying to convince the average patron that theirs was the most authentic presentation of the psychedelic sexual experience replete with natural hippie hotties. The true apotheosis of this movement came out of California, the nexus of both hippie culture and the at-the-time nascent American porn industry, the two would combine together and come (pardon the pun) to dominate the erotic era. This particular volume, encased in its own trippy slip-case, the book itself having a groovily erotic cover with neon-green stained pages, is filled with the psycho-sexual imagery and documentation of the time. “Psychedelic Sex” is a love letter to the age of sex and LSD, filled with commentary from those involved in the scene and accounting the history of the time.
