Hang Ups

Santa Fe, NM: Twin Flames Publishing, 2005. First Edition. Softcover. Signed by Steven Boone. “Art is the proper task of life.” – Friedrich Nietzsche. Steven Boone is not necessarily a household name in the art world the likes of: Dali, Picasso, Da Vinci, or Warhol, that being said, however, Boone is an artist whose work is as lovingly crafted and singular as the artists aforementioned. Boone, a graduate of The Maryland Institute, College of Art, in Baltimore in ‘78, has a career that spans a variety of different art disciplines from portraiture to surrealism. “Hang Ups” is almost a study on meshing surrealism and portraits together; each piece is an experimentation of several portraits of faces hanged, stretched, morphed and pulled at awkward non-Euclidean angles. Human faces eating each other's hair, drinking smoothies, crying and contorting; dog faces stretched and wrinkled in myriad forms, each portrait is vivid, rich, well realized, and captures the absurdity of Boone’s style in chrysalis. In this body of work, Boone plays with the contradictions of life with an openness that elevates them beyond parody. Boone’s ability to channel the surreal landscape of his mind and express it on canvas has enabled him to articulate a wide range of emotions. While in their midst, we float on reveries in a corridor where the nightmare-esque quality of Bosch meets sensibility of Ginsberg and the result is a wholly unique and ambitious work. [ISBN: 978-0970604637]. The author has signed, on the title page in thin black ink, the following: “To Jim– It is my pleasure to share art with you!”, then above his printed name, “Steven Boone”.
