Barbara Bush: A Memoir
ISBN: 0025192752
New York, NY: Lisa Drew Books, 1994. First Edition. Hardcover. Signed by Barbara Bush. “In her memoir, Mrs. Bush for the first time gives readers a very private look at a life lived in the public eye for more than twenty-five years,” (from front flap). Barbara Pierce (1925-2018) met George H.W. Bush (1924-2018) before he shipped out for World War II, and they married upon his return when they were just 19 and 20, respectively. Thus began a lifelong career for Barbara as a politician’s wife. She stood by his side through myriad election campaigns ending in defeat as well as his time as a Congressman (1966-1971), Ambassador to the United Nations (1971-1973), Ambassador to China (1974-1975), Director of Central Intelligence (1976-1977), Vice President under Ronald Reagan (1981-1989), and ultimately, President of the United States (1989-1993). She established the Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy in 1989, serving as honorary chairperson until 2012. She also supported the omission of controversial causes like abortion access, civil rights, and AIDS awareness from political platforms, though she wouldn’t advocate in support of these causes. Bill Clinton blocked Bush’s reelection, and the Bushes had to transition back to being private citizens. Barbara’s stories and excerpts from her diary detail these many changing developments through the years and the way she found her cause with American literacy.
