In Their Lives: Great Writers On Great Beatles Songs (Uncorrected Proof)
New York, NY: Penguin Books / Blue Rider Press, 2017. Uncorrected Proof. Softcover. “The Beatles’ influence—on their contemporaries, on our cultural consciousness, and on the music industry ever after—is difficult to overstate. Arranged chronologically by the date of the song’s release, these essays highlight both the Beatles’ evolution as well as the span of generations their music affected. With contributions from twenty-nine authors and musicians, the breadth of the band’s impact is clear. These essays pay tribute to a band that ran the gamut of human experience in a way no musical group has done before or since” (Back Cover). It's easy for a book like this to get ‘lost in the stacks,’ as it were—so much has been written on the topic of the Beatles and their influence. Yet this book deserves a second look, for its pages to be turned by a set of eyes that sees them. Edited by Brown & Columbia graduate, Andrew Blauner, “In Their Lives” does an excellent job autoethnographically relaying the experience of ‘what’s it like to love the Beatles,’ but by its choice of authors also boasts a second strength. This ‘second strength’ is a literary one; voices like the great Jazz critic, Gerald Early, Chuck Klosterman, Rosanne Cash and Blauner, himself put forth dazzling prose on the topic fit to satiate most any appetite. The work is further aided by its inclusion of a short note authored by none other than Paul McCartney himself—a fitting crown to this regal collection. Long live Beatlemania!
