The Kerouac Connection, No. 17 (Spring 1989)

Bristol, England: The Kerouac Connection, 1989. First Printing. Stapled Wrappers. This vintage number of the UK literary journal of the Beat Generation & especially Jack Kerouac, edited & with contributions by David Moore, begins with "Frankie & Johnnie: A New York Memoir," about Kerouac & his first wife Edie (referring to their mutual affectionate nicknames) by none other than James Perrizo (1944-2006), the devoted Beat scholar & collector who was during this very period Edie's assistant & archivist here in Michigan. About a decade ago, we obtained Perrizo's staggeringly substantial estate collection of Beat Generation rarities, which we have only somewhat recently completed curating onto our site. Many items have sold, but many remain in our inventory with a nod to Perrizo whenever they are inscribed to him. This great but alas never-fully-fulfilled figure haunts & has immeasurably enriched the cyber-halls & headquarters of Third Mind Books, & very few of his actual writings have been published- this is one that should not be missed by the Beat-&-Beyond scholar-collector. Also in this issue are informative, mostly Kerouac-related articles by Moore, Stephen Ronan & others; a short piece by Kerouac himself, "I Had A Slouch Hat Too One Time," (in turn likely based on a monologue by William Garver, a mutual friend of William S. Burroughs & Kerouac in Mexico who is depicted in their works); & a book review section that includes an essay-review by Jennie Skerl, the noted critical biographer of WSB, concerning The Spontaneous Poetics of Jack Kerouac: A Study of the Fiction, the now-classic volume by the venerable Regina Weinreich, our esteemed colleague at the European Beat Studies Network (ebsn.eu). With reproduction of a photograph taken by Perrizo on "September 10, 1987, at University of Kansas, Lawrence"(copyright-contents page) depicting Edie with her arm around the shoulder of WSB. There he is, staring right at the elusive Perrizo- this writer can't get over it...my educated guess is that this occurred at the legendary River City Reunion gathering which was taking place right then. Also with notes on contributors (including a few preciously rare teasing details about Perrizo we'll have to follow up on...), letters & a "News" section on back cover with then-latest-Beat-related developments. Chapbook-format booklet in stapled wrappers. A most critically important issue, especially in our admittedly subjective estimation, in this highly collectible series. From the collection of Kevin Ring, publisher of Beat Scene magazine & other indispensable productions (many available here), & our good friend. In very fine condition with only modest shelf-wear to fine-edges & corners of front, back covers & spine-edge & some mild rusting & (almost non-existent) bleeding to staples at interior & exterior, else pristine. Very Fine. [Item #5561]
