Oxford, England: Osprey Publishing/ The National Civil War Museum, 2012. First Edition. Hardcover. "An icon of the Civil War, Joshua L. Chamberlain lived a life of perseverance, tragedy and triumph. From the battle of Fredericksburg to the Confederacy's formal surrender at Appomattox, Chamberlain participated in many landmark events of the War Between the States. A volunteer in the Union Army, his rise in rank to brigadier general and Medal of Honor recipient remains one of the most inspiring stories in American military history. He was also a great chronicler of the conflict, an eloquent and contemplative writer, though much of his most personal correspondence has remained unpublished, until now." (from front flap) An autobiography-in-letters by Joshua L(awrence) Chamberlain (1828-1914), whose larger-than-life story is stranger than fiction: He was an American university professor who became one of the most heroic, highly decorated officers in the Union Army during the Civil War. This volume spans Chamberlain's long & eventful life from his college years until his death, in three hundred of his own theretofore unpublished letters. Edited by Thomas Desjardin (b. 1964), the noted American historian; & with a foreword by James McPherson (b. 1936), another very acclaimed American Civil War historian. With a section of captioned historical photographs. Hardcover in unclipped dust jacket, first edition published in the UK on behalf of the National Civil War Museum in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania USA; first printing as indicated by number sequence on copyright page. From the collection of George V. Buehler (1933-2020), a prominent real estate developer & collector in Massachusetts & Arizona.
