New York, NY: William Morrow & Company, 1981. First Printing. Hardcover. Jane Alpert (b. 1947) spent the years between 1969 and 1974 evading persecution for her participation in the planning and execution of several bombings of government and corporate buildings in the New York City area. Protesting the war effort with a group of radicals that targeted locations associated with the military, she was convicted of conspiracy as the writer of the press letters from the bombers, but she jumped bail. She surrendered after years of falsifying her identity in order to support the underground rebellion against inequality, gentrification, and the war effort. Her years on the lam brought her to a point of realization that the radical methods and ideals were not the path she wanted to follow, and to return to any semblance of normalcy, she had to face the music. On January 13th, 1975, Jane was sentenced to 27 months in prison, of which she served 20 months, being released at the age of 30. Growing Up Underground is her confessional memoir to set the record straight about what she did and why.
