The Kerouac Connection No. 22 (Autumn 1991)
Glasgow, Scotland: The Kerouac Connection, 1991. First Printing. Stapled Wrappers. Offered here is Issue No. 22 of “The Kerouac Connection,” — the Slim Gaillard tribute issue. Gaillard, of course was the smooth-talking, multi-instrumentalist hepcat famously favored by the likes of Jack Kerouac and Neal Cassady, among numerous other bona-fide Beats. What’s unknown about Gaillard (and the Beats’ association with him, generally) is the 'intellectual kinship' aspect of things. Gaillard was a polyglot and “real intellectual,” for lack of better words — the man spoke five languages, in addition to having created his own dictionary of slang. So, we find here a linguistic kinship bubbling under the blues-&-jazz inflected surface -- very interesting! Beat-scholastic delights like this abound in the 22nd issue of Dave Moore’s "The Kerouac Connection." Table of contents, in full, reads as follows: [1] “Atop an Underwood,” by James Morton; [2] “Slim Gaillard, Photographed” by Al Campbell; [3] “Nobody Knows: an Obituary,” by Chris Challis; [4] “Poems” by Sam Smith; [5] “The Kerouac Tapes, An Annotated List” by Dave Moore; [6] “Inside Outside,” by Al Campbell; [7] “The Kerouac/Kerouac Connection,” by Colin Gower; [8] “Brighton Festival,” by Kaviraj George Dowden; [9] “Just Exactly the Same Guy,” by Sloy Nichols; [10] “Some British Beat History: 11,” by Dave Cunliffe; [11] “Magic, Just Add Water” by William Haynes Eliot; [12] “Las Vegas, America” by Chris Challis; [13] “Thursday in California,” also by Challis; [14] “Interview, 1988” by Alexis Lykiard; [15] “Jack in My Pocket” by Barrie McClure; [16] “Morning Hangover” by Linda Wallace; [17] “The Novelist on the Dustjacket,” by Steve Dalachinsky; [18] “Blues at 11 & Wintertime in Lowell,” by William Haynes Eliot; [19] “The Road” by Peter Bakowski; [20] “One Quantum Leap for Kerouac,” by Daniel Barth; [21] Book Reviews” by John Montgomery, Jeanne Conn, Jim Burns, Chris Challis, and James Morton; [22] “Letters; [23] “News,” and finally [24], “Notes on Contributors.” Small-format literary magazine-journal in stapled wrappers: the first and only printing of this Kerouac-themed periodical. From the collection of Kevin Ring, publisher of Beat Scene magazine & other indispensable productions (many available here), & our good friend. In very fine condition with only slightest shelf-wear, light rubbing, bumping to fine-edges & corners of front, back covers & spine-edge; equally (if not more) minute rusting to staples at interior & exterior, else pristine. Very Fine. [Item #5655]
