Original Concert Poster: Doors, Miller Blues Band, Daily Flash (June 1-4, 1967)
San Francisco, CA: Family Dog Productions, 1967. First Edition. Single Sheet. A poster (appx. 14" x 20") announcing a series of concerts collectively including the Doors, the (Steve) Miller Blues Band & the Daily Flash, during June 1-4, 1967 at the Avalon Ballroom in San Francisco. The great Spanish-American artist Victor Moscoso (b. 1936) created the artwork & graphics reproduced here, & "Moscoso" in dark-purple facsimile cursive handwriting is found at light blue background of lower margin just below border of image near right corner (see image). Also credited for "Lights" is the "North American Ibis Alchemical Co.," a memorably-named incarnation of Roger HIllyard, Ben van Meter & their associates. Hillyard (b. 1942) was highly involved with the exemplary psychedelic light shows of this era, later became the proprietor of a popular coffee shop, & most recently the practicing resident of a Zen Buddhist center- all in San Francisco. Van Meter (b. 1941) was also a major light show producer & experimental filmmaker at this time, & still engages in cutting-edge creativity as of this writing. According to the Talmudic scholarship we have consulted regarding this poster (which is similar in its depth to that of our underground comix from this period), this copy is a first printing, with a tiny blue-green dot "...located in the medium blue background 2 1/2" above the top right corner of the right edge of the "V" in "AVALON" & a tiny white dot "...located in the green just below and between the two "Ls" in "MILLER." King, FD-64-OP-1, pg. 129. (again, see our image, magnified). King writes: "The central image is the eyes and nose of a cat with two human profiles superimposed so that each is facing downward, one under each eye of the cat. Careful observation, particularly in the lettering, shows slight overlap of color intended to create a three-dimensional effect similar to but not as intense as on No. 53 (*see our item No. 5627, "From the Plains of Quicksilver"). This is the last of the four Doors posters by Victor Moscoso in the Family Dog series, and it is much sought-after and expensive." (pg. 130, see our item No.s 5587, 5667 & 5746- the other three Doors-related posters in Moscoso's Family Dog series). King has whimsically entitled this poster "Pink Panther" in this entry, & it is among the most iconic & much-reproduced psychedelic images of them all, in its rarest contemporary form as it appeared only weeks before the commencement of the "Summer of Love." From the collection of Dion Wright (b. 1937), a venerable artiste & sculptor who was at the center of the scene that produced this & the many other outstanding posters that symbolize a legendary time & place (see Wright's memoir, Tempus Fugitive, item No. 5008). In our sharp & seasoned (if overstimulated) estimation, this poster is in relatively very fine condition with only a touch of wear & a few tiny bumps, creases at edges & corners; one short, jagged-horizontal closed tear/crease from middle left edge through border-lines short of image (to the left of cat's left eye) with miniscule loss of surface paper (entire printed recto is otherwise completely bright & substantially mint). This item is too delicate to be rolled & must be shipped flat to assure no damage, therefore extra shipping costs will be required. Very Fine. [Item #5747]
