Beat Scene No. 77 (Early Summer 2015)

Coventry, England: Beat Scene Press, 2015. First Printing. Stapled Wrappers. This 2015 number of the magazine-format literary journal edited & published by Kevin Ring in the UK features a talk-based essay by Peter Anastas describing a visit to the great "Maximus" poet Charles Olson by none other than the Founding Father of the Beat Generation himself, Jack Kerouac, during October of 1968, the twilight of both literary giants' lives, with Kerouac so sadly drunk that he passed out into the arms of his in-laws who had accompanied him & had to be carried away...Also in this especially spectacular issue are several very important articles relating to William S. Burroughs, including by Jed Birmingham (of Reality Studio fame) on WSB's legendary residency in Tangier & his contributions to Jeff Nuttall's My Own Mag, by Heathcote Williams on WSB in London, & the episode of a suitcase of primary materials left behind by WSB during 1960 & later retrieved by Melville Hardiment; along with other WSB topics by David Holzer, & another piece by Holzer about the November 2014 annual Conference of the European Beat Studies Network (ebsn.eu) at Tangier in commemoration of WSB's centenary. With yet much more including an excerpt from Charles Bukowski's then-just posthumously released story collection The Bell Tolls for No One (edited & with an introduction by our good friend & EBSN colleague, the industrious & prolific Stephen Calonne); Eric Jacobs' "Charles and Jane: The Neighbors from Hell," on Bukowski's early, sordid relationship with Jane Baker; another Kerouac-related essay by Stuart Cormie; an interview with Joanne Kyger conducted by David Chadwick; a biographical-critical essay on Gary Snyder by veteran Beat biographer Barry Miles; & an interview with Beat-Zen Master Philip Whalen's biographer David Schneider conducted by Ring. With an as-ever plentiful review section including Hilary Finch on The Lost Interview: Interzone Extra by Jim Pennington, Aloes Books publisher & also our esteemed EBSN colleague (all about that WSB Hardiment suitcase business discussed in the Williams article above); R.I. Sutherland-Cohen on a volume of letters between Allen Ginsberg & Lawrence Ferlinghetti; & much more. With rare vintage & contemporary images throughout including WSB, his rifle-"paintbrush" in hand with his late shotgun-artworks in background on front cover. A particularly terrific issue in this indispensable & collectible series that never fails to make good on its front cover motto: "This is the Beat Generation." In very fine condition with only a touch of rubbing to front, back covers & stapled spine; some tiny bumps, creases at edges & corners of same. Interior very fine with only tiny bumps, faint creases at corners of page leaves. Very Fine. [Item #5762]
