Original Concert Poster: Chuck Berry, Eric Burdon & the Animals, Steve Miller Blues Band (June 27- July 2, 1967)
San Francisco, CA: Bill Graham, 1967. First Edition. Single Sheet. A poster (appx. 13&7/8" x 21&3/4") announcing a six-concert series produced by the legendary impresario Bill Graham (1931-1991), with performances headlined by Chuck Berry, along with Eric Burden & the Animals & the Steve Miller Blues Band, during June 27- July 2, 1967 at the Fillmore Auditorium in San Francisco. The brilliant American poster, underground comix & animation artist Greg Irons (b. Gregory Rodman Irons, 1947-1984) created the artwork & graphics reproduced here, & "Poster by Greg Irons" in facsimile hand-lettering is found just above black image border-line near lower left corner (see image). Credited for "Lights" is the aptly named Headlights, the pioneering psychedelic light show group led by Glenn McKay (b. 1936). According to the Talmudic scholarship which we have consulted regarding this poster, this copy is a first-&-only printing (King, BG-70-OP-1, pg. 409). King writes: "The central image is the back of the head of a man wearing a bowler hat. There is a small, rickety staircase going up the side of the hat leading to a tiny gazebo in which a tiny woman is standing. A large poisonous snake rises above her. This is the first Fillmore poster created by the late Greg Irons whose untimely accidental death in Bangkok, Thailand was a great loss to the artistic community." (pg. 409) A dazzling, whimsical production by the great Irons (whose animation work included the Beatles' film Yellow Submarine) from 1967's "Summer of Love" itself, in its singularly rarest original contemporary form. From the collection of Dion Wright (b. 1937), an acclaimed & prolific artiste & sculptor who was at the center of the scene that produced this & the many other iconic posters that symbolize a legendary time & place (see Wright's memoir, Tempus Fugitive, item No. 5008). See also our item No. 2230 (Skull Comics No.1 with episode written & illustrated by Irons). In our sharp & seasoned estimation, this poster is in relatively fine-verging-on-very-fine condition with only mild rubbing, browning, faint creasing & occasional spotting, tiny pinholes to mostly blank white outer margin; very slight wear & some tiny bumps, creases at edges & corners; several tiny pricks, pinholes at upper right area of image (which is otherwise completely bright & substantially mint). This item is too delicate to be rolled & must be shipped flat to assure no damage, therefore extra shipping costs will be required. Fine- Very Fine. [Item #5767]
