LOVE

Los Angeles, CA: Elektra Records, 1966. First Pressing. 12" LP. Released in 1966 on Elektra Records, Love’s self-titled debut album was a major influence on just about everybody in the L.A. music scene— many of which had seen the band play live at the Whiskey-a-Go-Go and were simply blown away by the quality of their musicianship. Of the 14 tracks which comprise the album, ten were recorded at the legendary “Sunset Sound Recorders” in Hollywood. The sessions took place over the course of four days in late January 1966 (the 24th-27th). The other four songs (“Emotions,” “Mushroom Clouds,” “A Message to Pretty” & “My Flash on You”) were recorded elsewhere, though documentation has not survived verifying exactly where those sessions took place. The record is unique in its mixture of garage, folk, and psychedelic rock. It shows a band already unique and comfortable within the confines of “a sound,” but also a band actively looking to reinvent itself in real-time. The version of “Love” that brings us 1967’s “Da Capo” is more present than the version of the band that brings us “Forever Changes” later that same year. Offered here is the scarce first U.S. pressing of “Love,” on the gold Elektra Label with matrix no.’s EKL-74001 complete with original Elektra label gold sleeve. Note on condition grading: here, we will use the Goldmine Grading system (as opposed to the trademark book-grading system TMB typically abides by). In EX- condition with only minor, scattered scuffing & various cm-length nicks-&-scratches at various locations; a bit of age-wear (would benefit heavily from a good cleaning) but still an impressive & tempting copy of Love’s undervalued debut. Near Fine / (EX-). [Item #5785]
