Junkie

London, England: The Olympia Press/The New English Library Limited, 1966. First Edition Thus. Softcover. "I have seen life measured out in eyedroppers of morphine solution. I experienced the agonizing deprivation of junk sickness, and the pleasure of relief when junk-thirsty cells drank from the needle. Perhaps all pleasure is relief. I have learned the cellular stoicism that junk teaches the user. I have seen a cell full of sick junkies silent and immobile in separate misery. They knew the pointlessness of complaining or moving. They knew that basically no one can help anyone else. There is no key, no secret someone else has that he can give to you. I have learned the junk equation. Junk is not, like alcohol or weed, a means to increased enjoyment of life. Junk is not a kick. It is a way of life." (conclusion of author's Preface, pg. 12) The first published work of William S. Burroughs, Founding Father of the Beat Generation & Beyond; among the greatest, most influential literary & cultural figures of all time. First published as a famously lurid-covered pulp paperback original during 1953, offered here is the very rare version published in July 1966 as No. 114 in the Traveller's Companion Series, a co-production of Maurice Girodias' Olympia Press (which issued the first edition of WSB's Naked Lunch in 1959) & The New English Library imprint. Smaller-format softcover original first edition thus with all first-issue points in Maynard & Miles (A1(d), pgs. 5-7); Shoaf (Section I, No.1(c), pg. 15) & Schottlaender (A1(D), pg. 2 of the new 5.0 Edition!). In the latter bibliography, it is noted that this first printing included a "clear tissue jacket" over the standard green TCS wrappers, which is not present here. From the collection of Kevin Ring, editor/publisher of Beat Scene magazine & other indispensable productions (many of which are available here), & our good friend in the UK. The earliest, pre-experimental (but with hints of what would follow...) WSB classic, a particular favorite of this writer, in a very scarce & significant form with important provenance. In relatively quite fine condition with only a hint of rubbing, mild browning & occasional faint scratching to front, back covers & esp. spine; a bit of wear & a few tiny bumps, creases at edges & corners of same; moderate rubbing, browning & spotting to edges of text block esp. upper edge. Interior very fine with only mild browning to blank inner covers, page leaves (the latter mostly at blank margins/edges; one tiny spot at lower thin side edge of first few leaves; tiny bumps, faint creases at corners of a few of same. Fine. [Item #5805]
