Original Concert Poster: Miller Blues Band, Siegal Schwall Band (July 6-9, 1967)

San Francisco, CA: Family Dog Productions, 1967. First Edition. Single Sheet. A poster (appx. 14" x 20") announcing a series of concerts with performances headlined by the (Corky) Siegel-(Jim) Schwall Band (here referred to as Siegal(sic)-Schwall), along with the (Steve) Miller Blues Band, during July 6-9, 1967 at the Avalon Ballroom in San Francisco. The great Spanish-American artist Victor Moscoso (b. 1936) created the artwork & graphics reproduced here, & "Moscoso" in dark-blue facsimile cursive handwriting is found just below lower lighter-blue border of image near lower right corner (see image). The photograph of (Miller?) band members is credited to Eric(sic) Weber, whose first name is actually spelled "Erik" according to King. Weber (b. 1940) is a still-active, acclaimed photographer who began his career during this period with posters, album covers etc. Credited for "Lights" is the "North American Ibis Alchemical (Company)," a memorably-named incarnation of Roger Hillyard, Ben van Meter & their associates. Hillyard (b. 1942) was highly involved with the exemplary psychedelic light shows of this era, later became the proprietor of a popular coffee shop, & most recently the practicing resident of a Zen Buddhist center- all in San Francisco. Van Meter (b. 1941) was also a major light show producer & experimental filmmaker at this time, & still engages in cutting-edge creativity as of this writing. According to the Talmudic scholarship we have consulted regarding this poster, it is a first-&-only printing. King, FD-70-OP-1, pg. 137. King writes: "The central image is four band members carrying guitar cases. The background appears to be fireworks." (pg. 138) King has entitled this poster "Chicago Fire." An exuberant exemplar of the Moscoso psychedelic style (especially the mind-boggling lettering that can appear as indecipherable hieroglyphics) as it reached its peak during the "Summer of Love," in its singularly rarest contemporary form. From the collection of Dion Wright (b. 1937), a highly regarded artiste & sculptor who was at the center of the scene that produced this & the many other iconic posters that symbolize a legendary time & place (see wright's memoir, Tempus Fugitive, item No. 5008). In our sharp-eyed & diligent (if dazzled) estimation, this poster is in relatively very fine condition with only a bit of wear & a few tiny bumps, creases at edges & corners; two tiny areas from upper edge with miniscule loss of dark-pink surface color. The entire printed recto other than above is completely bright & substantially mint. This item is too delicate to be rolled & must be shipped flat to assure no damage, therefore extra shipping costs will be required. Very Fine. [Item #5825]
