Order and Chaos Chez Hans Reichel

New Orleans, LA: Loujon Press, 1966. Limited First Edition. Hardcover. "Dear Reichel- It is three o'clock in the morning- just time enough to say hello because in a little while you will be here shaking my hand and saying "Merry Christmas, Miller, and how are you today!" I will say now that I am very fine indeed- and how are you this beautiful Christmas day, my dear Reichel? You have now a little house of your own, and I see that it is very orderly and cosy. You should be very happy in your little home, no?" (Henry Miller to Hans Reichel, Christmas Eve, 1937, pg. 15) A collection of letters by Henry Miller (1891-1980), the great American writer & artist whose earlier works were an influential precedent for the Beat Generation; to Hans Reichel (1892-1958), the German-born Parisian artist & writer. Written during 1937-1938, these letters were originally compiled into a hand-written book gifted to Reichel by Miller. In this sumptuous, exemplary Loujon Press production with a great variety of papers & textures, the texts of the letters are transcribed along with some facsimile manuscript pages, various illustrations etc. With an introduction by Lawrence Durrell (1912-1990), the celebrated British cosmopolitan novelist & travel writer. Offered here is the "Cork Edition," featuring a cork-covered front endpaper, one of 1399 copies published in December 1966 per Shifreen & Jackson, A157c, pgs. 385-386. S&J lists seven issues of Order and Chaos, of which this is the third & relatively largest, from a "1524-copy limited first edition" (dust jacket front cover) . Hardcover in illustrated tissue-dust jacket in slipcase. A stunningly beautiful handmade LP masterpiece; a very important Miller collectible in an astonishingly rare, rich & varied original form. Book in very fine condition, all but mint inside & out except for one tiny, closed tear at upper left edge of dust jacket front cover, with many delicate but fully intact elements. Slipcase relatively quite fine with light rubbing to front, back panels, esp. spine & upper, lower edges; mild wear at edges & corners incl. minor loss of surface paper; moderate browning, spotting to spine (possibly as issued). Very Fine / (Slipcase) Fine. [Item #5839]
