Beat Scene No. 42 (Early Spring 2003)

Coventry, England: Beat Scene Press, 2003. First Printing. Perfect Bound. Any day in which our establishment receives a copy of the illustrious “Beat Scene” is a phenomenal day as far as we are concerned, and today's volume is as fine a volume as you can get! This vintage early spring 2003 issue of the magazine-format literary journal edited & published by esteemed owner operator, Beat scholar extraordinaire, and our dear friend, Kevin Ring in the UK features an interview with Texan Juan Ochoa conducted by Rob Johnson in 2002 on William S. Burroughs’ residency there during the mid-late 1940s, a predecessor to Johnson’s book, “The Lost Years of William S. Burroughs: Beats in South Texas” (2006). Among this interview also lies a series of several articles on Jon & Gypsy Lou Webb, whose Loujon Press published the “Outsider” literary journal, & their relationship with American poet colossus Charles Bukowski (1920-1994); a surreal article about Neal Cassady’s encounter with president Eisenhower by Steven Edington; an interview conducted by Edington with Anne Murphy on her affair with Cassady; an interview with prolific and lauded Beat biographer & poet Tom Clark conducted by Kevin Ring; a tribute to artist Larry Rivers who had recently died; & more. Replete with many reviews, including Jack Kerouac’s “Book of Haikus”, & a myriad of photo-illustrations throughout. Another wonderful and increasingly rare earlier issue in this collectible series that never fails to uphold and fulfill its motto: “This is the Beat Generation.” In very fine condition with slight smudging to front and back covers and the slightest wear to fine edges. Overall substantially mint. Very Fine. [Item #5864]
